Miley Can't be Tamed, or Can She?

There are quite a few new entries this week, so let's get on to it.

100. Glee Cast, Poker Face
Glee did a Lady Gaga episode, so this song is a must. Though, I was never really very fond of the original, this version is quite cute. They've gone and changed the arrangements around, a sort of piano ballad. It's very much worth a listen. My prediction, like all glee stuff, next week, not here.


96. Gyptian, Hold You
While not very original in its style, the song does have a good drive to it, but after a while, the drive stays on the same speed for too long, and the song gets monotonic without much dynamics. I don’t predict a very good future for this song.


95 Zac Brown Band, Free
I've usually found their songs to be entertaining, It's starts off with a soft violin solo, and then into quite a lovely country ballad. I wonder how this will do on the country charts. Anyway, this might stick around on the Hot 100 Charts for a while, but I don’t think it will get very high. Maybe top 50.


86. Glee Cast, Bad Romance
Another Lady Gaga cover, by the glee cast. It's not a bad attempt, and you can tell that the effort has been put in. It's not the original, though. Not here next week.


81. Glee Cast, Safety Dance
I was a little nervous before hearing this, as the original is one of my favorite 80's tunes. When I finally heard it, I thought it was downright utter garbage. You don't try to rap the Safety Dance. I am not amused! Next week, this won't be here, and I never want to hear this again (picture me with a very angry face).


79. Christina Aguilera Featuring Nicki Minaj, Woohoo
Interesting beat going for it, but I wasn't really pulled in by it. Not very catchy, IMO. This will do alright, but not brilliant. It'll hang around for a few weeks, and fade away.


77. Muse, Neutron Star Collision
I get what they're going for, but they're not getting there. I always enjoyed muse's music, but this is a bit disappointing. It's not a bad song, far from it. They've just got better. All this being said, this song might do well here. It'll break top 50 IMO, but not much higher than that.


51. Avenged Sevenfold, Nightmare
Nearly breaking in into the top 50, but not quite there. They are one of the better bands for this genre these days. I wonder though, if the death of their drummer six months ago contributes to the popularity of this song. It's an OK song, but not much more. It reminds me a lot of Alice Cooper. The chorus is very good. Next week this will drop.


43. 3OH3!, Touchin On My
My favorite for this week. I think they sound best when they're not collaborating with other artists. This is pretty good. Good drive, great dynamics, pretty catchy. This will do well.


31. Glee Cast, I Dreamed a Dream
They do it very well. No doubt there, and it deserves a high spot in the charts. It won’t be here next week like all their other stuff. All that said, Susan Boyle kicks this out of the park.


26. Glee Cast, Dream On
They've done this Aerosmith song quite well. Obviously you can't touch the original classic, but the performance here is first rate. Bravo. Unlike the rest of the Glee songs, this one will still be here next week, though it will probably drop.


8. Miley Cyrus, Can't Be Tamed
This week's highest new entry. Is she trying to shake off her good girl image? It's not really working. The song itself is nothing we haven’t really heard of and wouldn't get anywhere had the Miley Sirus name not come with it, but she's obviously trying to break out and show us that she's an adult. Well, I personally think she did this too soon. I did chuckle at the video clip.


OK, let's see how last week's song did, and how my predictions did too.
Right:
In general I got the Glee stuff right, but I did think that their version of One would still be here, even in a low place.
Charice featuring Iyaz, Pyramid – I like being right.

Wrong:
Lil Wayne, I’m Single – I wasn't even close.

Undetermined:
Justin Bieber, Somebody to Love – I though it would do much better, but a climb of 18 places isn’t bad.
Enrique Iglesias featuring Pitbull, I Like it –I said it wouldn't last long, but it only climbed six places to 82. So I'm not completely wrong.
Katy Perry featuring Snoop Dog, California Gurls – it was an obvious hit. I still wonder how long it'll stay.

Mixed Feelings

It's an interesting week ahead, so let’s get to it.

98 Justin Bieber with Somebody to Love from the album My World 2.0. The chorus is quite good and very catchy, but that seems to be the only thing that manages to carry the song, because the rest is quite below par. None the less, this will get far, IMO.


93 The Glee Cast are still turning out songs. This time with Rose’s Turn. It’s a nice version, with a good performance. I found it enjoyable to listen to. Not much else to say, but next week it won’t be here.


89 Enrique Iglesias featuring Pitbull with I Like it. It’s a bouncy song, but not really very original, and didn’t really pull me in, even a little boring. The pace more or less stays the same throughout the song, and doesn’t really give the listener much variety. I don’t think this will be here for very much longer.


82 Lil Wayne with I’m Single, hmmm, I’m not sure about this one. It’s not bad, but not wow. For the genre, I’d say it’s interesting. Hard to try and predict this one. It’s not very mainstream, but has the potential of getting somewhere. I’m going to gamble and say this will get to the top 50.


81 Glee Cast with Lady is a Tramp, It sounds like one of those songs that they know is not going to be anywhere near as good as the original, so they went and had as much fun as they can with it. It’s enjoyable. Next week, won’t be here.


76 Glee Cast with The Boy is Mine. The original wasn’t too bad a song in the late 90’s, and it’s a nice attempt they’re doing here. The performance is good, and they managed to fit the message well into the episode. Anyway, good stuff, but next week, like all Glee songs, not here.


60 Glee Cast with One. According to Wikipedia, this is the 26th cover version of this song. And they’ve done a very good job here. They took a great song and kept its value. I’ll call it my favorite for the week. This might stick around a week or so, but not much more than that.


56 Charice featuring Iyaz with Pyramid from the album Charice. The song has potential, but I wasn’t blown away. The hook (pyramid in the chorus) sound a little too forced on. It might still be here next week, but my feeling says it’ll head downward.


23 Glee Cast with Jessie’s Girl. How much do you want to bet they name the characters on the show based on songs they like. I loved the original when I was kid, but this lacks the same power it had. I’m surprised that out of all of Glee’s releases this week, that this came in the highest, and pretty high too. I don’t see this lasting.


2 Katy Perry featuring Snoop Dog with California Gurls from the album California Gurls. I’m not really sure what to think about this. The song drags a bit until the chorus, but then really goes far, and pulls you in. Me like. Good stuff, While this is a straight-away hit, I wonder how long it can last.


OK, let’s see how I did last week:

Right:
Theory of a Deadman with All or Nothing – I said it wouldn’t last, and it left the charts.
Glee Cast – I said they all won’t last, apart from Total Eclipse which might stick around a bit.

Wrong:
Drake with Find Your Love – I seemed to have missed the beat on this one. I thought the song wouldn’t do too well, but it’s climbed up 15 places.
3Oh!3 and Ke$ha with My First Kiss – I thought it would hit top three, it dropped down to 21.

In Between:
Lee Brice with Love Like Crazy – I said maybe another week, it climb very few places.
Young Jeezy and Plies with Lose My Mind – I didn’t like the song and thought it would drop in the charts. It did, but only by 10 places.
Eminem with Not Afraid – yep still a hit, though falling 5 places.

New Entry at No.1

It’s an interesting week, with a couple of surprises.

At 99, we’ve got Theory of a Deadman with All or Nothing, from their album, Scars & Souvenirs. No, it’s not a Milli Vanilli cover, it’s more a generic rock song lacking quite a lot of originality, and I like rock music. It’s got a nice tune to it, but really, it sounds like so many other songs. I don’t think this will be here next week.

At 97, Lee Brice singing Love Like Crazy, from the album of the same name. For a Country Rock song, this isn’t too bad. It’s got a nice drive, and very good performance. Who are we kidding though, this is the Hot 100, Country doesn’t get very far here, and this song is no exception. Maybe another week.

At 92, The Glee cast are trying to touch M.C Hammer’s U Can’t Touch this. Never mind not touching it, they’re not even reaching in the right direction. It’s quite a disappointment for the Glee people. This won’t be here next week either.

At 89, The Glee club are trying to get Physical. Much better than their touching attempt. Without a doubt what helps them keep in shape here is Olivia Newton John, who after all these years, can still teach them a thing or too. This might stay around for another week or two.

In at 74, Whenever I hear this opening riff I get all mad that I’m not going to hear Under Pressure. The Glee cast are doing Ice Ice Baby. It’s not much better than the original, but that’s not difficult to do. I really hope this isn’t here next week.

Up at 61, Not too many new entries this week, but they all seem to be Glee. This time, it’s Run Joey Run. It’s cute, and well performed. Not much more to say, the Glee have had so much attention the last few weeks. I don’t think this will hold on another week.

Jumping in at 35, Young Jeezy and Plies with Lose My Mind. I know I haven’t been nice to the other songs in this week’s blog, but with song, I have to keep being negative. What is good about this song? There’s nothing here. It’s way too monotonic and boring. Next week, this will go down!! Nuff Said.

At 34 we have Drake singing Find Your Love. Not too bad, and quite pleasant to listen to. This might stick around for a couple of weeks, but as nice as it is, I don’t think it has lasting power.

Dropping in at 16, and my favorite for this week, the glee cast are covering Total Eclipse of the Heart. This is one of those songs where anyone can do it and will sound great. While it doesn’t have Bonnie Tyler’s power, it’ll stick around for a few weeks.

Screeching into the 9th spot, 3OH!3 and Ke$ha with My First Kiss. It’s a good song, and will stay here for a while, maybe even make top 3 (pun not intended). But what’s the point of having Ke$ha in it? She brings no value to the song at all.

OK, new entry at No.1……Not Afraid by Eminem. I think it doesn’t really matter what I say here, the song’s a hit.

Let’s see how my predictions from last week went.
What I got right:
Big Time Rush ,Halfway There. I said it wouldn't last long and it left the charts.
Glee nothing’s left from last week, only the new stuff. Pity, because I liked their songs from last week.
Shakira ,Gypsy. I didn’t like it, and it’s going down!
The Black Eyed Peas,Rock That Body. Well it was pretty obvious it would do well.

What I got Wrong:
Alpha Rev ,New Morning, I thought would do better. It left the charts.
Jerrod Niemann ,Lover, Lover. Though I liked the song, I predicted it wouldn’t do too well. It climbed 15 places.
B.o.B Featuring Rivers Cuomo ,Magic .I thought it would do well, it left the charts.

Undetermined:
David Guetta ,Gettin' Over You, while I did say it won’t be around for long, it did slightly climb.
Mike Posner ,Cooler Than Me, while I did predict it would get higher, it still climbed 20 places.

There Have Been Better Weeks

Here we are again, new charts, new entries:

At 100, Alpha Rev with New Morning, from the album of the same name. It’s a nice song. Not very original, but enjoyable. I think Kings of Leon have started to inspire other bands. To be honest, I’m not sure which way this could go. My hunch says it’ll do well.

At 95, David Guetta & Chris Willis Featuring Fergie & LMFAO performing Gettin' Over You. Pretty predictable, but still bouncy. This should do well in the clubs. Here on the charts, I don’t think this will around for too long. The song opens well, but then just gets repetitive and dull.

At 93, boy band Big Time Rush singing Halfway there. It’s a little catchy, but there’s not really much substance to the song. It’s very unoriginal and I’d probably change station if I knew something better was on. This song will not get very far.

At 90, the Glee cast are taking us Home. The musical style is done well, and the performance isn’t too bad either. It’s not a mainstream song, so the chances of this still being around next week are pretty slim. Still, I enjoyed listening to it.

At 89, it’s Jerrod Niemann with Lover, Lover. For a country song, this arranged pretty well. It’s a little slow to take off, IMO, but a pretty solid song. It’s been around on the country charts for a few weeks now, and jumped into the 100 this week. Sadly, it won’t stay here for very much longer. Country songs really have to be WOW, and basically not sound country to get high up in the chart.

At 85, Mike Posner and Big Sean with Cooler Than Me. The song is pretty cool, and has a great beat. It’s catchy, bouncy, and just overall not too bad. I’d like to see this get high up. I’ll say it’ll get into the Top 50.

At 83, it’s B.o.B featuring Rivers Cuomo. Well pretty much anything (though not everything) this guy touches turns to gold. I think this will also get pretty far. Top 20 even. I liked it. It just pulls you along with it. It reminds me a bit of Heya from a few years ago. I’m going to choose this as my favorite for the week.

At 70 it’s the Glee kids again singing A House is Not a Home. They should do more of this stuff because the performances out do the more modern songs they sing. It’s a very good version of the song. As with other Glee songs in the past few weeks, I’ve learned my lesson to be careful with my predictions, so I’m going to say that I have a feeling I won’t be hearing this song next week.

At 65, Shakira singing Gypsie from the album She Wolf. Well, it’s not a cover of Fleetwood-mac’s 80’s hit, which is a pity, because that would at least be tolerable. This is very very plain. Next please.

At 64, Glee are on Fire, well not really, it’s a nice cover version, but all the other versions are better (even springsteen elvis imitation version). It’s nice to listen to, and it’s got a good beat going for it, but I’m not quite sure how this reached higher than their other releases this week. I don’t see this still here next week.

At 62, the Black Eyed Peas with Rock That Body. It’s not as strong as some of their other songs, but this will probably go far. I don’t quite understand why they’re using such heavy vocal effects though. Fergie's regular voice not good enough?

At 61, Glee have gone Aguilera with Beautiful. It’s a very nice version, but nothing can beat the original in this case. It just doesn’t have the same power, and a little thin (could find a better word). This will hang in there for maybe a week or two, but not much longer.

At 53, and this week’s highest new entry, It’s Glee covering One Less Bell to Answer. Nice, very very nice. Well performed, well produced. It won’t be here next week, but still, good stuff.

OK, let’s see how I did with my predictions from last week….Not too well apparently.

Reba with I Keep on Loving You. I thought It would do much better
I got all the glee stuff completely wrong, my Bad.
What did I get right?
Shontelle, I thought it would do much better, but it’s still climbing so we’ll have to see about that.
In the middle?
Ciara and Ludacris’s Ride. I thought it wouldn’t last, it’s slowly creeping up
B.o.B Featuring T.I. & Playboy Tre performing Bet I. I hated It, though it would be one that I would hate but do very well. Well, it didn’t. So I’ll say I’m half right.

Glee's Doing Madonna

Another week, another chart. Here are this week’s new entries:

At 93 we have Ciara with Ludacris singing Ride. This song is boring. Nothing new, nothing original, bland and monotonic. I’m disappointed with both of them. I don’t think this is going to get very far.

At 91, it’s Tim McGraw singing Still, from his album Southern Voice. For a Country song it isn’t too bad. It’s got a nice tune, and emotional arrangements. But it’s very unoriginal and far from being one of his better songs. The song is doing alright on the Country charts, but here, I don’t see it breaking top 50.

At 90 it’s Reba preaching to us with I Keep on Lovin’ You. I’ve never really enjoyed songs using bible references, so the lyrics here put me off a little, but musically this song is very good. It’s a strong Country ballad, catchy and a good hook in the chorus. On the Country Charts it will get very far, but here, I’m predicting 40’s maaaaayyybeeee 30’s, but no more.

At 89, The Glee cast are having a Madonna week. They’re covering 4 Minutes. It’s a powerful performance and it’s covered well. The song itself was never brilliant in my opinion. I think the song placement is fair, and might do a little better.

At 88, Shontelle is singing Impossible, from the album of the same name. I’m going to say this is my favorite of the week. It starts off pretty unoriginal, but the chorus is what gets you. This will get far. Top twenty and maybe even higher.

At 87, the Glee folk are continuing with their Madonna escapades with Like a Virgin. This could have been done better. Maybe it’s because the original is such an 80’s classic. Not much more to say here. This will linger somewhere in the 60’s next week. Next please.

At 78, more Madonna Glee. This time it’s time it’s a medley, Borderline and Open Your heart. It’s an Ok performance, they got the 80’s feel right on this one. Not much else. I have a feeling this won’t be in the charts much.

At 72, we’ve got B.o.B with Playboy Tre. This is going to be one of those songs that I really don’t like, but will probably get far into the charts. OK, so I’m not a fan of the Genre, but I can usually see the appeal a song (or lack of). 40’s.

At 27, this week’s highest new entry is again the Glee cast with Madonna’s Like a Prayer. Well, they’ve obviously put the effort into this one. It’s pretty good (nowhere near as good as the original). I’m not sure if this will climb much higher, but it’ll probably stick around for a while.

Now let’s have a look at last weeks predictions:
Lets’ start with what I got wrong, Both Hello, and Hello I Love You from Glee pretty much left the charts when I thought they’d be hits. Christina’s I’m Not Myself Tonight also went pretty far down.
Where did I get them right? Glee again. Their version of gives you hell dropped to 92. Brad Paisley’s Water is slowly creeping up. Same thing with Jason Aldean’s Crazy Town.
